This has proven to be a wonderful activity on not only learning how to read and create coordinate grids, but to understand the importance of reading and creating coordinate grids. The children also worked on skills in communications arts with writing summaries, making lists, and practicing with persuasive speaking, with social studies on studying and drawing maps, and with science on investigation.
Two classes completed a "trial run" of this WebQuest and helped make it "kid" friendly.
This WebQuest will take approximately 5 to 6-one hour sessions.
It is best for the students to work in pairs because of the excessive use with the computer. It might be a good idea to combine two classes for this activity and pair up students who don't know each other well, but will work cooperatively together. The same partners work together throughout the whole WebQuest... until the end. You will need to join together two pairs of students to present the uses of coordinate grids to other classes.
You will need atlases and encyclopedias available for the students.
There are several places that the children will need to print copies. Feel free to print the copies in advance for them.
